Thierry Henry wants Rooney to be included in England Squad
Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry is of the opinion that Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney should be included in the England squad, but he admitted that the 30-year-old is no longer the first choice with the team.
Rooney has been suffering from poor form in the last two years, but it has been due to a combination of being played out of position. Since the arrival of Anthony Martial, Rooney has been asked to play in a variety of roles like an attacking midfielder or wide man. These are positions where scoring a lot of goals will be tough.
It is, therefore, not a big surprise that Rooney has been able to score only 11 goals so far this season. Some, though, would have been expecting the player to have come up with more than 5 assists. The presence of several top goal scorers like Daniel Sturridge, Harry Kane, and Jamie Vardy makes for a compelling case to drop Rooney from the squad. However, the experience of the 30-year-old can be matched by few strikers available for selection. This may be a major reason behind taking Rooney to the Euro 2016, according to Henry. The former French international, though, is against taking Marcus Rashford, who has featured for United only since February, to the tournament.
"I don't even know why there was a question of him going to the Euros or not. Now the question is if he is going to start. Should he start? Play on the left? Play behind the striker? You can't also deny that there is an understanding with [Harry] Kane and Dele Alli. Is Alli going to play No 10 with Kane and whoever is on the wing? It's a tough one, because you don't want [Rooney] on the wings anymore, that is for sure,” said Henry.
