Rooney's Role In United Under Doubt

With Manchester United all set to bring in a couple of quality midfielders in the form of Arturo Vidal and Ander Herrera, the discussion on Wayne Rooney’s role in the team has started again. If the Red Devils manage to secure both the above mentioned deals, which they are likely to do, there would be only one position left for Rooney to play in i.e. at the left wing.

Everybody knows that Rooney is not quite comfortable playing as a left winger. The England boss, Roy Hodgson, used him in that position in the FIFA World Cup 2014 but, he couldn’t take the best out of him.

However, to be fair to Rooney, he simply didn’t get enough touches on the ball in the World Cup matches to be able to make big impact. Whenever he got the opportunity, he tried to make full use of that. He, in fact, influenced both the goals scored by England in the tournament. But, most of the people would agree that he was not at his best playing at the left wing. He could have been better utilized in a more aggressive role.

One of his fans, Plain Sailing, said Rooney had been unfairly judged.

At Manchester United, it’s almost certain that Rooney would not be the main striker for the new boss Louis Van Gaal.
Van Gaal would use his compatriot Robin van Persie in that role and rightly so. The way the Netherlands skipper has performed for United in the last couple of years, he deserves that.

In the last season, Rooney was used as an attacking playmaker by David Moyes in most of the games and he had settled in that position pretty well. But, if Vidal and Herrera come in, Rooney is not going to play there either. So, either he would feature at the wings or not feature at all.

The picture would be clearer though once Van Gaal takes charge after the World Cup.
