FERGIE BACKS ROONEY
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he is extremely sure that striker Wayne Rooney will one day beat the record set by Sir Bobby Charlton for the most number of goals scored for Manchester United.
Bobby Charlton currently holds the record for having scored 249 goals for Manchester United during his career with the Red Devils. Wayne Rooney scored two goals against Everton during the weekend to moved level with George Best and Dennis Viollet when it comes to the goalscoring charts.
Wayne Rooney now has 179 Manchester United goals to his credit, and Sir Alex Ferguson believes it will not be long before he catches Bobby Charlton's record.
The 26-year-old striker scored two goals in the 4-4 draw with Everton to take his total tally for the season to 34 goals, thus making it one of the best seasons for him at Old Trafford. Even though the record went largely unnoticed due to the two dropped points by Manchester United in the title race, Ferguson was quick to praise Wayne Rooney for his achievement.
Manchester United two dropped points against Everton coupled with the win for Manchester City means that the title is not in the hands for Manchester United, who head into the vital Manchester Derby next week.
“He is only 26. He’s got time on his side to beat all types of records now. What did Bobby get, 249? He’s every chance of beating that, hasn’t he? I’m sure he will do it. Wayne is the one player who has scored regularly for us this season. I always felt a few years back that he was a player who got goals in clutches but now it evens itself out, which is good. He got two for us last Sunday and his goalscoring record is terrific,” Ferguson said.
