Wayne Rooney insists Romelu Lukaku is perfect for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney believes Romelu Lukaku is the perfect signing for Manchester United following his recruitment from Everton earlier this summer.

The Belgium international joined the Red Devils for an initial £75m, and his arrival permitted Rooney to seal a return to boyhood club Everton.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Rooney said that Lukaku is the perfect player for his former side as he has the right physique and goal scoring potential to improve the squad, he said: "For that United side, he is the perfect player. He is powerful, quick and strong and he scores goals, so certainly will improve that team."

Rooney left United as their all-time goalscorer on 253 goals, and he has since added to his Everton tally with two goals in the opening three games. The 31-year-old worked alongside four managers during his 13-year stint at Old Trafford, and he admits that Louis van Gaal was probably unlucky to have not lasted the distance at United, he added: "He [Van Gaal] got a lot of stick. I believe if he stayed it would have got better. He looked at all the small details not only off the pitch but on the pitch. I think the one thing he did was keep the standards with the players, he was demanding the best from you every day."

Nevertheless, he praised the progress made by current boss Jose Mourinho, who guided the club to EFL Cup and Europa League glory last season despite their evident struggles in the top-flight. The likes of Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof were added to the squad earlier this summer, and the Portuguese is hoping to continue his brilliant record of lifting the league title in his second season in-charge of a club.Manchester United are leading the Premier League standings with nine points after three games into the season.
